The Children’s Bike Exchange Scheme was set up in October 2013 with funding from Bristol City Council’s Active Neighbourhood Transport Grant and Travel West.  The basic aim of the scheme is to fix up and safety check unwanted children’s bikes which can then be swapped at affordable costs (depending on condition) for outgrown or damaged kids bikes. Families are also able to buy bikes from us if they do not have a bike to exchange. The team is made up of a manager and two apprentices aged between 16 and 25 years.  Young offenders, volunteers and work placements also help with this scheme.   Please note that a child can only exchange a bike once per year with us. We would also like to thank Bristol Bike Project and Lifecycle UK for their kind donations and ongoing support with this scheme.

Typical exchange prices are 12inch to 16 inch bikes £15, 18inch to 20 inch bikes £20, 24inch bikes £25 for our budget range, then we also sell higher quality alloy frame kids bikes for between £35.00 and £65.00. Although we sell 26inch and 700c bikes, they are considered adult size so are not subsidised by us.

The “BIKE EXCHANGE” sessions at Hannah More have been fantastic! Over 30 children have swapped their bikes for bigger sizes and many more have had their bikes repaired. We’ve had queues of excited children (and parents!) waiting to get into school at 8.00am! We are always looking at ways to encourage families to leave their cars behind, and practical help to get people cycling again is a fantastic way of doing this. Guy and Rach and the other mechanics are great to work with and the feedback from our school community has been wonderful!
